Introduction to the Monastery of Batalha
The Monastery of Batalha, officially Santa Maria da Vitória Monastery, is a masterpiece of Late Gothic and Manueline architecture, founded in 1386 by King João I in thanksgiving for the victory at the Battle of Aljubarrota.
Designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1983, it is one of Portugal’s most iconic landmarks.
