Nazaré: the land of giant waves

Nazaré: the land of giant waves is a modern story in a town that has more than a thousand years to tell. The waves may be queen here, but the traditions that mark these people have been the roots that have transformed its development.

This is one of the most fascinating coastal towns in Europe and it´s here in the Silver Coast Portugal, less than 1.5 hours from Lisbon, easily accessible by car or bus.

Nazaré main attractions
1. Nazaré Beach

Praia da Nazaré is certainly the town’s main asset, you could even say it’s its heart. The beach attracts many people during the summer and is one of Portugal’s best-known coastal towns.

The beach is ideal for swimming, but also for walks by the sea.

2. Fort of São Miguel Arcanjo

This iconic viewpoint is at the southern end of the beach! Situated on a steep cliff, it is sought after by people from all over the world as the main vantage point for watching what are considered to be the biggest waves in the world.

The fort dates back to the 16th century and was built by King Sebastião and used as a defense against pirates from North Africa, and later used as a defense by the French army.

Inside the fort you’ll also find a museum where the phenomenon of giant waves is explained, as well as some of the surfboards and bodyboards used by surfers.
