In the Sítio, the main legend of Nazaré comes alive, which is part of the collective imagination that makes it one of the most charismatic fishing villages in the country. We begin with the Hermitage of Memory, where the legend of the miracle is recorded, in which Our Lady prevented the horse of D. Fuas Roupinho from launching on the cliff.
Then we visit the Sanctuary of Our Lady of Nazaré, whose construction began in the 14th century and has been increase and enriched over the years, thanks to the growing cult.
The Fort and the Giant Waves
The sea, the great wealth of Nazaré, today gains a new life with Surf, with special emphasis on giant waves surfed by Garrett Macnamara and other world-renowned surfers.
From the Fort of São Miguel Arcanjo, whose construction dates to the reign of King Sebastian in 1577, we have a fantastic view from the Atlantic Ocean and the famous North Beach, where with the ideal atmospheric conditions, the waves gain giant dimensions.
