Convent of Christ of Tomar & City Highlights: Private Tour
omar and its unique Convent of Christ (a UNESCO World Heritage site) have a special place in world history and lots of stories, art, and architecture that you don’t want to miss. This charming medieval town in central Portugal unexpectedly became the unofficial new headquarters of the legendary and powerful Knights Templars, shortly after they were disbanded on the orders of the Vatican, in the 14th century. They were rebranded the “Order of Christ” and, eventually, one of its Grand Masters became pivotal to the Age of Discoveries: his name was Henry the Navigator. Later on, in 1581, the Convent of Christ was the stage for the creation of the Iberian Union sealing the formation of the biggest empire in the World at the time. We will take you through the Convent of Christ and the Castle of Tomar, show you the Jewish synagogue, give you a flavor of the charming modern-day Tomar and take you to the most photo-friendly Castle of Almourol, located on a tiny island on Tagus River.
Obidos and Nazaré Tour
Explore the most charming medieval town of Óbidos with an experienced and knowledgeable guide which will take you through the history and tales, the streets and alleys, the castle and the churches, the fine art, and (last but not least) the sweet and authentic tastes of this ancient Portuguese land: the famous Ginjinha de Óbidos- on a chocolate cup! Don’t miss out on the trendy bookstore Ler Devagar located on a former royal chapel, the 1300-year-old Muslim castle, the old Moorish and Jewish quarters, the superb “pietá” of renaissance master Nicolau de Chanterene and the works of the celebrated XVII century painter Josefa de Óbidos, the first Portuguese female artist to get to the Louvre. Learn about how the queens of Portugal had a major role in the history of this “Town of the Queens”. Among them, is celebrated Queen Leonor de Avis, famous for creating the oldest surviving hospital and relief network in the world: “Holy House of Mercy”. She was called the “Most Perfect Queen”. NAZARÉ The Nazaré canyon, a natural formation making a massively deep and large hole in the sea floor right next to the shoreline, creates massive waves that make this spot, Praia do Norte, a Meca for adventurous surfers all around the world. The canyon also hides a Nazi submarine, which was sunk there on purpose never to be found again… We will also visit the Sanctuary and Memory Chapel, and will be able to have a breathtaking view of Nazaré and a great deal of the Silver Coast shore (all the way to the Berlengas Islands). Last but for sure not least, you will also get to know Nazaré itself, a one-of-a-kind traditional fishing village, its narrow alleys facing the sea, and its old traditions like the “Dry Fish” and the puzzling “sights” of local women wearing their famous seven skirts.
From Caldas: Guided Half Day Tour of Fátima
Fátima is considered to be one of the major catholic pilgrimage sites in the world: it is visited by more than six million people every year. This half-day tour offers travelers a visit to the most emblematic sites of the Sanctuary of Fátima, namely the Apparitions Chapel, the Basilica of Our Lady of the Rosary of Fátima (where the little shepherds Lúcia, Jacinta, and Francisco were laid to rest) and the contemporary Basilica of the Most Holy Trinity, built to provide more room to welcome the pilgrims from all around who come to Fátima. Visitors will have the time to freely explore the sanctuary and its surroundings.
Batalha Monastery: Private Guided Tour
Batalha Monastery (XIV century) is a true and unique masterpiece of European architecture (late Portuguese Gothic and Manueline style). You will be able to see the marvelous royal pantheon, the resting place of King D. João I and British-born Queen D. Filipa de Lencastre, and several other members of the royal family. Among them, King D. João II and Henry the Navigator, two key actors in the Portuguese Discoveries around the world, which paved the way for Portugal to become the first global empire. Built to commemorate the decisive victory of the Portuguese in the Battle (“Batalha”) of Aljubarrota in 1386 against the Kingdom of Castille, it became a symbol of national independence and marked the beginning of a new era in the history of Portugal. Consecrated to the Virgin Mary, the monastery was run by the monks of the Dominican Order, who lived and worshiped here for over 600 years, inspired by the colored lights of the stained glass of the cathedral, the first of its kind in the country.
