Templar Knights Heritage, Tomar and Almourol
Tomar and the Templar Knights are virtually synonymous. In this visit we will discover the important link that began with the donation of these lands to the Templar Knights order by King Afonso Henriques in 1159.
We start with a brief walk through the streets of the historic centere of Tomar to the statue of the knight templar Gualdim Pais, founder of the city, starting point to know the vast heritage and history that is inhaled throughout Tomar.
Santa Maria dos Olivais church
Our visit continues with the Church of Santa Maria dos Olivais, built by Gualdim Pais as a Pantheon of the Templars, in the perimeter there are vestiges of the Roman city Sellium. In front of the church, there is a quadrangular tower that is believed have had a tunnel linking the church to the castle, proof of the many mysteries and secrets that still surround the Templar Knights
The Convent of Christ, Templar Knights
We continue towards the high Castle of Tomar, noble protector of the city and the Convent of Christ. Closely linked to the founding of the kingdom of Portugal and the presence of the Templar Knights, what we can see today is the result of centuries of history, influenced by several dynasties and mastery of important architects who left their mark here. From the imposing complex that makes up the Convent, the highlights are the “Charola” and “Janela Manuelina”.
Castle of Almourol, an island of magic
After lunch, and inspired by the morning visit, we set out to discover new Templar Knights mysteries. In the middle of the Tagus River, on a small island of 310 m long by 75 m wide, we find the Castle of Almourol, endowed with an enigmatic and romantic aura, whose secrets we will unveil together.
