What to do on the Silver Coast Portugal:
Silver Coast Travelling is based in one of the many towns that make up the Silver Coast - Caldas da Rainha. The Silver Coast is a Portuguese coastal region that stretches from Aveiro to Torres Vedras.
Here we'll share details about some of the towns and cities Silver Coast Travelling works in.
Caldas da Rainha:
The city's foundation is linked to the Thermal Hospital and its therapeutic waters, and at the end of the 19th century ceramics came to transform its dynamics.
The great figures here are Queen Leonor, King João V, Rodrigo Berquó and the master Bordalo Pinheiro. Despite being a small town (30,000 inhabitants), it has 10 museums.
Main places to visit:
-
- Praça da Fruta;
- Thermal Hospital;
- D. Carlos I Park;
- Óbidos Lagoon;
- Foz do Arelho beach.
Peniche:
Known as the "Capital of the Wave" due to the fact that one of the stages of the world surfing championship passes through the Super Tubos beach is set on a peninsula making it a "Mecca" for surfers.
Once an island, it was already inhabited by the Romans who began the fishing activity for which Peniche is also known. Then there are many stories of pirates, fires set to cause the sinking of ships and looting as a result. Fortresses were built to protect the coast, and in the last century one of them was turned into a prison by the Estado Novo.
But that's not all, for nature lovers you can always get on board and set off to discover the Berlengas Archipelago and explore its trails and crystal-clear (but cold...) water beach on foot.

Nazaré:
The legend of Nazaré dates back to the 18th century and from there it has evolved to the present day!
In recent years the town has been gaining more and more recognition for its giant waves (said to be the biggest in the world), but it wasn't always like this. For centuries Nazaré was a fishing community and then a bathing destination.
Among its traditions are dried fish and the seven skirts worn by the "Nazarenas".
Main places to visit:
- Fort;
- Sanctuary;

- North Beach.
Alcobaça:
Alcobaça is known for the grand medieval monastery of Santa Maria built in the 12th century. Inside you can find the fantastic tombs of King Pedro I and Queen Leonor, in what is considered one of the greatest love stories in Portuguese history.
In addition to the monastery, the city is renowned for its pastries, which of course have a monastic influence. Not to be missed: Cornucopias.
Main places to visit:
- Monastery of Santa Maria;
- Coz Monastery.
Óbidos:
The town of Óbidos is located to the north of Cape Carvoeiro and half-walls with the neighboring town of Caldas da Rainha.
With its long history and rich history, its scenic setting is one of its greatest trademarks and gives it a uniqueness all of its own, which is probably one of the reasons why, in the 21st century, Óbidos was considered one of the 7 Wonders of Portugal.
The castle dates back to the 8th century and was built by the Moors. Later, in 1148, the castle was conquered by King Afonso Henriques. When King Dinis came to power in 1279, the town of Óbidos was donated to his wife, Queen Isabel (a saint), and became part of an institution managed by her: The House of Queens, thus earning the title of Óbidos Queen Village.
This tradition continued until the 18th century.
