Peniche:

Known as the “Capital of the Wave” due to the fact that one of the stages of the world surfing championship passes through the Super Tubos beach is set on a peninsula making it a “Mecca” for surfers.

Once an island, it was already inhabited by the Romans who began the fishing activity for which Peniche is also known. Then there are many stories of pirates, fires set to cause the sinking of ships and looting as a result. Fortresses were built to protect the coast, and in the last century one of them was turned into a prison by the Estado Novo.

But that’s not all, for nature lovers you can always get on board and set off to discover the Berlengas Archipelago and explore its trails and crystal-clear (but cold…) water beach on foot.

The castle dates back to the 8th century and was built by the Moors. Later, in 1148, the castle was conquered by King Afonso Henriques. When King Dinis came to power in 1279, the town of Óbidos was donated to his wife, Queen Isabel (a saint), and became part of an institution managed by her: The House of Queens, thus earning the title of Óbidos Queen Village.

This tradition continued until the 18th century.
